Is Sam’s Club’s AI-Assistant the Key to Winning Gen Z Customers Away from Costco?

The competition for dominance in the retail sector has been notably fierce between Sam’s Club and Costco. Each giant has carved out a distinct niche in the market, attracting a loyal following of customers who swear by their unique offerings.

Sam’s Club and Costco have a similar number of U.S. clubs, but Costco generates about twice the annual revenue. In the last fiscal year, Sam’s Club had net sales of $86.2 billion, while Costco's U.S. clubs reached $176.63 billion.

Sam’s Club, owned by Walmart, has recently made waves in the industry by ramping up its shopping experience through state-of-the-art technologies like AI-driven equipment, the innovative "Scan & Go" app, and automated receipt-verification technology at exits. These strategic moves are aimed at differentiating itself from its arch-nemesis, Costco, while also catering to the evolving preferences of the Gen Z demographic.

Since its launch in January, the chain has implemented automated receipt-verification technology in around 120 out of its nearly 600 stores. The retailer aims to roll out this technology across all its stores by the end of the year. The next phase involves opening the newest Sam’s Club store, set to be the first all-digital store for the membership club, near Dallas, Texas by the end of this month.

Sam’s Club versus Costco: A Comparison of Two Retail Giants

In comparing Sam’s Club with its chief competitor, Costco, several key aspects come into play. While both companies operate in the warehouse club retail space, they distinguish themselves through brand positioning, value proposition, and unique selling points. Costco, known for its no-frills approach and bulk-buying deals, has a strong appeal to shoppers looking to snag a bargain on everyday essentials. On the other hand, Sam’s Club positions itself as a more upscale option, offering a curated selection of products and services at competitive prices.

Empowering Customers with AI-Enhanced Shopping

Sam’s Club’s recent push for enhanced shopping experiences highlights its commitment to understanding customer pain points and addressing them head-on. By leveraging AI-based equipment like the "Scan & Go" app and automated receipt-verification technology at exits, the retailer is streamlining the checkout process and reducing wait times for patrons. The introduction of permanent sushi-making stations and expanded e-commerce offerings with online-only displays in stores further enriches the shopping experience, catering to a diverse range of customer preferences.
